Shirred ribbon (or fabric) is used to decorate the outside of a box, add an edge to a pillow, or if the ribbon is narrower, to make an interesting leaf or rosette-style flower. Any width ribbon, ½" to 3" wide, with a finished woven edge works well for shirring. If the ribbon has wire in the edges, remove the wire before stitching. If you can’t find just the right ribbon for your project, use fabric strips. Turn the long sides of the fabric under ¼" and proceed with stitching. As a rough guide for the amount of ribbon or fabric you will need to use, double the length of the area you are covering.
