The book can be used for two sequential courses in propulsion—an introductory course in jet propulsion and a gas turbine engine components course. The second part can be used as course material for a turbo machinery course by its own. The first part of the book consists of eight chapters.
Chapter 3 is devoted to pulse and ramjet engines. Both have nonrotating elements and resemble the simplest types of jet engines. Pulsejet was extensively used by the Germans during World War II. Recently, attention is being paid to the new pulse detonation engines (PDE). Both subsonic and supersonic ramjet engines are analyzed. In this and the subsequent chapters treating other air-breathing engines, a performance analysis of a supersonic ramjet operating at different conditions is performed. Two- and three-dimensional illustrations for the results are given.
