Aircraft Propulsion and Gas Turbine Engines by Ahmed F. El-Sayed

By Ahmed F. El-Sayed

The escalating use of plane within the 21st century calls for an intensive realizing of engine propulsion suggestions, together with the functionality of aero engines. between different serious activities, gas generators play an in depth position in electrical strength new release, and marine propulsion for naval vessels and load ships.

In the main exhaustive quantity thus far, this article examines the basis of airplane propulsion: aerodynamics interwoven with thermodynamics, warmth move, and mechanical layout. With a finely targeted strategy, the writer devotes each one bankruptcy to a selected engine style, akin to ramjet and pulsejet, turbojet, and turbofan. Supported via genuine case reports, he illustrates engine functionality less than numerous working stipulations.

Part I discusses the heritage, classifications, and function of air respiring engines. starting with Leonardo and carrying on with directly to the emergence of the jet age and past, this part chronicles innovations up throughout the 20th century. It then strikes right into a specific dialogue of alternative engine kinds, together with pulsejet, ramjet, unmarried- and multi-spool turbojet, and turbofan in either subsonic and supersonic functions.

The writer discusses Vertical Take Off and touchdown airplane, and gives a entire exam of hypersonic scramjet and faster ramjet engines. He additionally analyzes the differing kinds of business gasoline generators having single-and multi-spool with intercoolers, regenerators, and reheaters.

Part II investigates the layout of rotating compressors and generators, and non-rotating elements, intakes, combustion chambers, and nozzles for all sleek jet propulsion and gasoline turbine engine platforms, in addition to their functionality. each bankruptcy concludes with illustrative examples by way of a difficulties part; for larger readability, a few supply a list of vital mathematical relatives.

The first part covers the history, classifications, and performance of air-breathing engines, while the second part is concerned with the design and analysis of the rotating and nonrotating modules (or components) of aero engines and gas turbines. The book can be used for two sequential courses in propulsion—an introductory course in jet propulsion and a gas turbine engine components course. The second part can be used as course material for a turbo machinery course by its own. The first part of the book consists of eight chapters.

Chapter 3 is devoted to pulse and ramjet engines. Both have nonrotating elements and resemble the simplest types of jet engines. Pulsejet was extensively used by the Germans during World War II. Recently, attention is being paid to the new pulse detonation engines (PDE). Both subsonic and supersonic ramjet engines are analyzed. In this and the subsequent chapters treating other air-breathing engines, a performance analysis of a supersonic ramjet operating at different conditions is performed. Two- and three-dimensional illustrations for the results are given.
